Toddling to Evel Knievel, All in a Year

In motherhood, change happens whether you're ready or not – and usually at the speed of a toddler hyped up on birthday cake.

As 2024 rolls in, I'm taking a moment to look back on a year that was more surprising than finding a quiet moment in a house with three kids. I've always been the practical type, focusing on the now, with my comfort zone firmly established in the familiar routines.

But motherhood, as I've learned, is a whirlwind of change. By the end of 2023, my youngest went from just learning to walk to zipping around like a mini Evel Knievel on his balance bike. In motherhood, change happens whether you're ready or not – and usually at the speed of a toddler hyped up on birthday cake.

This past year, I began to wonder what life could look like beyond the path I had tread for the last decade. As my kids grew from toddlers to little people with their own personalities, I realized my role as a mom was evolving too. And with this realization came the question: How does one plan for change when their default setting is 'play it safe'?

The answer started with learning from others. I began with reaching out to other moms in the design/online business world, who somehow manage to juggle creativity and chaos with grace and a good sense of humor.

It also led to some real talks with my agency's leadership – where I've been a staple longer than that outdated meme on the office fridge.

It meant embracing late nights, working extra hours. There were nights of work so late that even Netflix checked in to see if I was still there.

Yes, Netflix, I'm still watching, and no, I don't need sleep when I have website to design and various kid appointments to schedule.

For someone who finds comfort in routine, the leap into the unknown is daunting. Yet, it became clear with many prayerful conversations that my mantra for the year needed to be

My hope and joy are not found in my circumstances.

It's a reminder that my strength doesn't come from stability or predictability, but from the Lord’s grace and power. This understanding liberates me from the fear of change. It allows me to step into the unknown, confident that even if this year doesn't align with my grand plans, I'm sustained by something greater.

So, as I venture into this new year, I invite you to join me in embracing the unknown with a bit of courage and a good dose of humor. Whether you're navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood, shifting gears in your career, or just looking to break out of your comfort zone, remember: our circumstances don't define our joy or hope.

Here's to a year of growth, laughter, and embracing whatever comes our way – one day, one coffee, and maybe a few Schitt's Creek episodes at a time.
