The summer I chased color instead of profit

Katie Higginbotham

This summer I made a decision that would make a spreadsheet cry.

It was my first full summer not working for anyone but myself, and instead of packing every open hour with more clients and more output, I slowed all the way down. I chose presence. And somewhere in the middle of it, I remembered the thing I say to every woman I work with. Your business is meant to give you a life, not take one. That is what a brand that fits your life is really about.

Most of the CEO moms I meet are running a business that runs them right back. Clients, a reputation, a calendar that never stops. But the brand and the business have started to feel like a machine they have to feed. More posting. More tweaking. More proving. And the life they started the business to protect keeps getting pushed to the edges.

It does not have to work that way. Your brand can be built to fit the actual life you want, the school pickups, the slow mornings, the big family trips. Colorful, strategic, and still working for you even when you step back. That is the whole idea behind my Color Currency Method, and this summer I accidentally tested my own theory.

What a brand that fits your life actually means

A brand that fits your life is not a smaller brand or a softer one. It is a brand strong enough to keep working while you actually live. When your visuals, your message, and your website are doing what they should be, you stop having to be everywhere at once.

The brand carries your reputation into rooms you are not standing in. It brings the right clients to you while you are at the beach with your kids. It reads as just the right fit so you are not explaining your worth on every single call.

What slowing down actually looked like

The first half of this year handed us some hard things. In the middle of it, I felt the Lord asking me to slow down. To be present. To take care of myself and the people I love. So that is exactly what I did.

Here is the part I did not plan. Stepping back turned into the truest test of everything I teach. I pulled my hands off the wheel for a few weeks at a time and got to watch what my brand did without me hovering over it.

In Seaside, we stayed at our favorite spot in WaterColor with my whole side of the family. Mahjong, swimming, late night beach walks, and a truly unreasonable amount of dessert.

In DC, I tagged along on my husband's work trip and turned my days into solo adventures, and I was blessed with gorgeous weather the whole time. One of those days was a full day at a Made for Mothers meetup, which filled my cup in a way only a room full of like-minded mamas can (more on that below). The United States Botanic Garden was my favorite stop by far, and I lingered there way longer than anywhere else. I wandered the National Gallery of Art and stood in front of more pieces than I could count, then had a slow solo lunch in the Sculpture Garden. I made it to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History too, which honestly was a little boring without my kiddos.

In Denver, we went to Red Rocks twice. Once for Eric Church on my actual birthday, all acoustic, and it was so good. Once for the Avett Brothers. We did Meow Wolf, which is a weird little favorite of mine. I took a whole solo day at the Four Seasons pool with a spa day pass and spent it with margaritas, tacos, and a good book by the water. It was heavenly. I worked a few hours from a coffee shop inside the Populus, one of coolest hotels I have ever set foot in.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I remembered what it feels like to be a whole person outside of motherhood.

I served just the right number of clients this summer. Not the most. The right number. And now my fall is already filling in.

Was this my most profitable summer? Not even close.

Was it fun, fulfilling, and a real gift? Every single day.

The reason I could do all of that without my business falling apart is simple. My brand kept working while I rested.

Your business is meant to give you a life, not take one.

Meet the Color Currency Method

For years, the way I use color has been the thing my clients point to. It is my signature, the part of brand strategy I am best at and the piece people tell me they cannot quite replicate. For a long time it lived mostly in my head, showing up project by project without a name.

This was the summer I finally gave it one. I took that signature strategy, the instinct I have leaned on for years, and started shaping it into an actual method and framework I could teach. I call it the Color Currency Method, and it is built on one belief. Your brand should match your life.

When it does, your color stops being decoration and becomes currency. A recognition engine that keeps earning while you live.

Here is the takeaway I want you to hold onto.

A brand that fits your life is your brand strategy based on your real life. Your wardrobe, your hobbies, your office or your clinic, your closet, your home, the colors you already reach for every day. So when you show up as your brand, there is no friction. Nothing about it feels fake or borrowed, because it is your actual life.

When your brand works that way, you stop paying what I call the friction tax, the hours and the missed visibility that come from translating between who you are and how your brand looks. Repetition becomes recognition. Recognition compounds. Revenue compounds right along with it, and none of it asks you to be louder.

The full method moves through five steps that spell COLOR, and I am walking women through the whole thing soon. I got to teach it out loud for the very first time this summer, leading a workshop at the Made for Mother's flagship chapter in Loudoun County, Virginia. Standing in that room and watching it land for women I respect so much, I realized the thing I had been doing all along was a framework worth putting my name on.

Your season is not a setback

If you are in a slower season right now, hear me on this. That is not you falling behind. Rest is not the opposite of ambition. Some of the best things I built this year grew directly out of the summer I stopped forcing it.

A brand that fits your life is what lets you take the season you need without the whole thing coming undone. It holds your reputation steady. It keeps the right people finding you. It gives you room to be a whole person and a business owner at the same time.

How to start building a brand that fits your life

A few places to begin.

Notice where your brand makes you do all the work.
If your presence only moves when you personally push it, that is a brand problem, not a you problem.

Get clear on the life you actually want.
The trips, the mornings, the pace, the room to breathe. Your brand should be built around that life, not the other way around.

Make it unmistakably yours.
Color, personality, and a message that sound like you are how you get remembered without ever having to shout.

Then let it carry you.
A strategic brand should keep earning while you go live your life. That is the entire point of building one.

Picture next summer. You step back for a few weeks and the inquiries still come in. Your name still travels. The right clients still find you, drawn in by a brand that looks and sounds exactly like you. You are at the beach, or on a solo walk in a new city chasing color, and your business is holding steady without you gripping every hour of it.

That is a brand that fits your life. That is reach, revenue, and reputation working for you instead of the other way around.

If you are ready for a brand that lets you live like that, send me a voice note and tell me about the life you are building or go ahead and book a discovery call so we can chat all about it.
